About Missouri Southern State University and Award
Founded in 1937 as Joplin Junior College, Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) has evolved into a prominent institution of higher learning, rooted in a rich history and commitment to academic excellence. In 2003, the Missouri General Assembly authorized the university’s renaming to Missouri Southern State University – Joplin, only to later streamline the name to Missouri Southern State University in 2005. The university’s physical footprint has expanded over the years, with noteworthy additions such as the Taylor Performing Arts Center in 1973 and the Richard M. Webster Communications and Social Science Building in 1992.
Continuing its dedication to enhancing educational offerings, Missouri Southern State University recently completed the construction of a state-of-the-art health sciences building. This facility, initiated with funding from MOHELA and allocated by the state of Missouri, reflects the university’s commitment to providing cutting-edge resources for students pursuing health-related disciplines.
The university found itself at the epicenter of community resilience during the aftermath of the devastating 2011 Joplin tornado. Located just northeast of the most severe destruction, the MSSU campus played a crucial role as an emergency shelter and coordination center for identifying victims and survivors. Notably, the Taylor Performing Arts Center hosted President Barack Obama, who addressed the community and inspected the tornado’s impact.
