Domestic uses of LPG

LPG is used mainly for domestic cooking as well as lighting through the use of pressure lanterns.

Commercial Uses of LPG

LPG can be used in many applications such as the manufacture of ceramics, production of paper, heating, metal cutting, welding, and chemical processing. It can also be used in the Agricultural sector especially tea processing industries in addition to other specialist applications.

When Purchasing

  • Whether you are buying a cylinder for the first time or you are exchanging your empty cylinder for a full one always buy your cylinder from Oilibya authorized dealers.
  • Before buying a cylinder, inspect it for visible defects. Cylinders sold by Oilibya distributors will be clean, well painted and free of rust.
  • Ensure your distributor weighs your cylinder for you at the purchase point. This ensures that you get every kilogram of LPG that you are paying for.
  • Also, ensure that the cylinder has a safety sticker on its side, just below the collar. The safety sticker is in both English and Kiswahili languages and gives you basic instruction for gas use.
  • Ensure that the cylinder you buy has a white tamper resistant seal bearing the genuine Oilibya logo on it. This seal should not have been tampered with and should never come out without breaking.
  • Please ensure that you obtain an official receipt. Remember this is proof that you purchased this cylinder from a particular outlet.

When Transporting

  • Cylinders should be transported in an upright position, never in a horizontal position. When carrying by hand hold the cylinder by the collar ring.
  • Cylinders should be offloaded gently from the vehicle and should never be dropped from a height.
  • Cylinders should never be rolled on the ground. For heavier 40kg cylinders, the use of a handcart or something similar is recommended.

Use in the house

  • When in use the cylinder should always be in an upright position. The cylinder should ideally be placed outside the house. If this is not possible however, place the cylinder in a well ventilated room away from direct heat or open fire.
  • On reaching home, remove the tamper resistant seal, which should break as you remove it. Ensure that your LPG regulator clicks firmly onto the cylinder valve.
  • Ensure that the rubber hose that you use to connect the cylinder to your cookers not expired. Expired rubber becomes brittle and could cause gas leakage. Expiry dates are printed on the rubber hose. If your hose does not indicate an expiry date, please replace your rubber hose with one from an Oilibya outlet. Hoses are usually sold in lengths of two meters to ensure that cylinders are sufficiently far from direct heat and the naked flame from the cooker.
  • When lighting your cooker, always light a match before you turn on the gas, then hold the lighted match next to the cooker burner. This ensures that there is no accumulation of gas in the room.

Gas Leak

In the event of a gas leak

  • Cooking gas has a characteristic smell like a bad cabbage or garlic to alert you of a leak. Please familiarize yourself with the smell.
  • In case you smell leaking gas, do not light matches, operate electrical switches or introduce any form of a naked flame. Open all windows and disconnect the cylinder and move it outside the house.
  • Check whether the leak if from the cylinder. If it is please return the cylinder to the Oilibya distributor where you purchased it. If it is from the cooker, please do not use the cooker until your cooker dealer rectifies the leak.
